What is CBG

We have all heard the benefits and healing properties of CBD. And now research is validating those claims.  It’s also likely that someone you know has shared their own personal story of the success they have had. Or, perhaps you have your own positive experience.

But, what is CBG? There’s a good chance you haven’t heard about it yet.

The Basics

Cannabis plants contain many different chemical compounds. Cannabanoids are one group of these compounds. The human body has an endocannabinoid system. This system receives these cannabinoids and uses them to support body functions.

The two most widely known cannabinoids are THC and CBD.  CBD and THC both have profound healing properties, but THC is often looked at in a negative light because of its psychoactive properties.  It is the only cannabinoid present in the cannabis plant that has the ability to “intoxicate”.

What is CBG?

CBG stands for cannabigerol.  It is not a common cannabinoid and is not found in large quantities within the cannabis plant.  Considered the precursor to CBD, CBC and THC, CBG is often referred to as the stem cell.  When the inactive form of CBG breaks down, it becomes the base molecule that other cannabinoids form from, including THC and CBD.

CBG vs CBD

CBD and CBG are both cannabinoids, but they are different compounds within the cannabis plant and serve different purposes.  CBG may help with more conditions and is currently in numerous tests for a variety of treatments.

Both of these cannabinoids are not psychoactive, distinguishing themselves from THC. This allows users to use without inhibiting day-to-day functions or hindering mental clarity.

Potential Benefits of CBG

Currently, there are several trials and case studies in progress with CBG.  It has promise to be an effective treatment for several conditions.  At this time, it is still in the research phase, but studies show promising results for these conditions:

  • Pneumonia – CBG has powerful anti-inflammatory properties and can directly target inflammation in the air sacs of the lungs making it an ideal cure for pneumonia.
  • Glaucoma – CBD currently on its own does not help with glaucoma, however, THC does.  CBG reduces intraocular pressure resulting in the potential for the treatment of glaucoma.  This would allow those patients who have glaucoma to treat without the intoxication effect of THC.
  • MRSA – The most fatal bacterial infection is MRSA.  It is a type of staph infection that is resistant to the most common types of antibiotics. Studies have shown that it has potential to treat bacteria that are resistant to traditional antibiotics
  • IBD and Colitis – Inflammatory bowel disease and colitis can cause people to experience abdominal pain, joint pain, cramping, diarrhea, poor appetite, weight loss, and nausea.  By reducing inflammaton, CBG shows positive results in treating these conditions.
  • Huntington’s and neurodegenerative diseases – There have been studies that show CBG normalizing expression of abnormal genes linked to brain degeneration.  This indicates that it is a neuroprotective compound and potentially could be an effective treatment for diseases such as Huntington’s.
  • Cancer – There have been multiple studies that show that CBG is effective in inhibiting the growth of certain cancer cells.
  • Bladder dysfunction disorders–  CBG has shown to inhibit muscle contractions, giving it the potential to treat bladder dysfunction disorders.
